Handmade products, Amazonian Shoes “supports and encourages local artisans and communities to produce their handicrafts in a sustainable and environmentally friendly manner, protecting the environment and their culture heritage”.Andreia, tell me about the origin of “Amazonian shoes”! “The Amazonian Shoes are made in the northeast Brazil, inside the Amazonian Rainforest, in a state that is forgotten by the rest of Brazil, the Acre state. They are the product of the creativity of Doutor da Borracha (Portuguese for Master of Rubber, the artisan is called like this by the community, due to his knowledge on the subject). Thanks to a course taught by University of Brasilia he got to learn a new technique to produce rubbers sheets. After this he started developing handicrafts, and his imagination brought him to the beautiful and colorful Amazonian Shoes.

Doutor lives inside the rainforest, he never went to school and he doesn’t know how to read or write. He is a rubber tapper, an artisan, a designer and a professor. He teaches other communities how to work with wild rubber. He works with his wife, Lene. Together they are an unbeatable team, he brings in the knowledge, creativity, techniques, and she brings in the feminine eye, for colors, organization and business! These are the hands creating the Amazonian Shoes.

I am Andreia, I have a background in design and I fell in love with the Amazonian Shoes, and the story behind it, in a trip I did in 2010 to Brazil. After this I started to research about this incredible material, about this amazing artisan and I manage to get in touch with him.

I decided to import the Amazonian Shoes to Europe and spread this amazing work, as a social design project. The Amazonian Shoes are not only pretty, they represent much more. The wild rubber comes from wild rubber trees that are scattered around the forest, the trees are not harmed in the extracting process. Instead this activity gives value to standing and healthy trees, giving communities the possibility to earn a living by tapping rubber. Creating handicrafts with rubber gives even more revenues to local families. People stay in the rainforest and live in harmony with nature. The rainforest keeps standing.
This is my little contribution, I import and divulge this beautiful work and help protecting the Amazon rainforest”.

Andreia, can you describe me your project in three adjectives ?

• transparent,
• loving

Can you describe me your creations? “The Amazonian Shoes are made of rubber that comes from native trees of the Amazon Rainforest. They are made by hand without using electricity, the whole process is very manual. It takes time and love to make a pair of Amazonian Shoes. There are basically 2 models, the gladiators and the ballerinas, they can be colorful or in one tone. The Amazonian Shoes are malleable and they adapt to the shape of the feet. They are extremely light and comfortable and they can easily be folded, which makes them perfect for travelling”.

What it means ‘low environmental impact’ and ‘innovation’ for Amazonian shoes? “It means everything. We want to have the lowest impact on the environment. We want to keep researching in order to develop better products that can use innovation to lower even more the environmental impact”.

Are you partner in any CSR projects? “I have to confess that I had to google CSR projects! We are not partners of any project of Corporate Social Responsibility. We have the artisan as a partner and we believe that social and environmental responsibility are the base of the project. One can not exist without the other. :)”

What are your future plans? “To develop new exclusive models of Amazonian Shoes with Doutor. Have retail points that want to commercialize the Amazonian Shoes in Italy and in other European cities”.

Prodotti fatti a mano, Amazonian Shoes “sostiene e incoraggia gli artigiani e le comunità locali per produrre i loro manufatti in maniera sostenibile e rispettosa dell’ambiente, la tutela dell’ambiente e del loro patrimonio culturale”.

Andreia, raccontami come nasce Amazonian Shoes! “Amazonian Shoes è realizzata nel nord-est del Brasile, all’interno dell’amazzonica pluviale, in uno stato che è dimenticato dal resto del Brasile, lo Stato di Acre. Sono il prodotto della creatività di Doutor da Borracha (portoghese per ‘Master of Rubber’, l’artigiano viene chiamato in questo modo da parte della comunità, a causa della sua conoscenza in materia). Grazie ad un corso tenuto all’Università di Brasilia, ha avuto modo di imparare una nuova tecnica per la produzione di fogli di gomma. Successivamente ha iniziato a sviluppare l’artigianato, e la sua immaginazione lo ha portato alle belle e colorate Amazonian Shoes.

Doutor vive all’interno della foresta pluviale, non è mai andato a scuola e lui non sa né leggere né scrivere. Lui è un battitore di gomma, un artigiano, un designer e un professore. Insegna altre comunità come lavorare con la gomma selvaggio. Lavora con la moglie, Lene. Insieme sono una squadra imbattibile: Doutor ci mette la conoscenza, la creatività, le tecniche, mentre Lene il suo essere femminile per i colori, l’organizzazione e le imprese! Queste sono le mani che creano Amazonian Shoes.

Io sono Andreia: ho un background in design e mi sono innamorato di Amazonian Shoes, con la storia che c’è dietro, grazie ad un viaggio che ho fatto nel 2010 in Brasile. Da qui, ho iniziato la ricerca su questo materiale incredibile, su questo fantastico artigianato, riuscendo a mettermi in contatto con lui.

Ho deciso di importare Amazonian Shoes in Europa e a diffondere questo straordinario lavoro, come un progetto di design sociale. Le scarpe di Amazonian Shoes non sono solo belle, essi rappresentano molto di più. La materia prima proviene da alberi della gomma selvatici che sono sparsi in tutto il bosco, gli alberi non sono danneggiati nel processo di estrazione, anzi quest’attività dà valore alle radici e agli alberi sani, offrendo l’opportunità alla comunità di guadagnarsi da vivere. Le persone rimaste nella foresta pluviale vivono in armonia con la natura. Questo è il mio piccolo contributo: importare e diffondere questo bel lavoro e aiutare a proteggere la foresta amazzonica.

Andreia, mi puoi descrivere il tuo progetto in tre aggettivi? “Eco-friendly, trasparente, amare”

Puoi descrivere le tue creazioni? “Amazonian Shoes sono in gomma, che proviene da alberi nativi della foresta pluviale amazzonica. Sono fatti a mano, senza l’uso di energia elettrica, l’intero processo è molto manuale. Ci vuole tempo e l’amore per fare un paio di scarpe di questo tipo. Ci sono fondamentalmente 2 modelli: i sandali stile gladiatore e le ballerine, che possono essere colorate o in un monotono. La peculirarità di queste scarpe è che sono malleabili e si adattano alla forma dei piedi. Sono estremamente leggere e confortevoli e possono essere facilmente essere ripiegati, il che le rende perfetti per viaggiare”.

Che cosa significa ‘basso impatto ambientale’ e ‘innovazione’ per Amazonian Shoes? “Significa tutto. Vogliamo avere il minor impatto sull’ambiente. Vogliamo mantenere la ricerca al fine di sviluppare prodotti migliori che possono utilizzare l’innovazione per abbassare ancora di più l’impatto ambientale “.

Siete partner in progetti di CSR? “Devo confessare che ho dovuto googlare progetti di CSR! Noi non siamo soci di alcun progetto di Corporate Social Responsibility. Abbiamo l’artigiano come partner e riteniamo che la responsabilità sociale e ambientale siano alla base del progetto. Uno non può esistere senza l’altro. 🙂 ”

Quali sono i tuoi progetti futuri? “Sviluppare nuovi modelli esclusivi di scarpe amazzonici con Doutor. Avere punti vendita al dettaglio per commercializzare in Italia e in altre città europee “.
